Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutec2.dll is the Microsoft C/C++ compiler back end, not a normal Windows system file. When c2.dll is missing or cannot be loaded, repair the Visual Studio or Build Tools installation that owns it instead of downloading a replacement DLL.
The file is described internally as Microsoft (R) 32-Bit 80×86 Compiler Back End and is part of Microsoft Visual Studio. It performs compiler back-end tasks such as optimization and code generation. Older Visual C++ releases and some software packages that bundle compiler tools may also contain it.
You may encounter messages such as:
fatal error LNK1171: cannot load file 'c2.dll'
Windows may also display a more general loader message:
The code execution cannot proceed because c2.dll was not found.
The correct fix depends on whether the error appears while compiling software or while launching an ordinary application or game.

First, identify where the error occurs
If the error appears during a build
A build-time error involving cl.exe, MSBuild, Visual Studio, or LNK1171 usually means that the C++ compiler toolset is incomplete, damaged, or being selected incorrectly.
The affected installation may be:
- Visual Studio
- Visual Studio Build Tools
- An older Visual C++ release
- A game-development or application-development package that bundles Microsoft compiler tools
A current Visual C++ Redistributable installation generally will not repair this problem. Redistributables provide runtime libraries for completed applications, while c2.dll belongs to the compiler toolchain.
If the error appears when launching an application
An ordinary end-user application normally does not need the compiler back end. If a game, launcher, installer, or specialized development application asks for c2.dll, it may bundle an old compiler or invoke build tools during startup.
In that case, note the exact application name and use its own repair or file-verification feature before changing Windows files.
Fix 1: Repair Visual Studio or C++ Build Tools
Time needed: 10–30 minutes, plus download time
This is the safest and most likely fix.
- Close Visual Studio, the affected application, terminals, and build processes.
- Open the Start menu.
- Type Visual Studio Installer.
- Open Visual Studio Installer.
- Find the Visual Studio or Build Tools installation associated with the error.
- Select Modify.
- In the Workloads view, select Desktop development with C++.
- Open Individual components.
- Ensure the required MSVC build tools component is selected.
- Ensure a compatible Windows SDK is selected.
- Select Modify and allow the installer to download and restore the files.
- Restart Windows after the operation completes.
- Open the affected project or application and repeat the action that produced the error.
Microsoft’s installation instructions for C++ support are available in the Visual Studio C++ installation guide.
Use Repair when Modify does not restore the file
If the workload is already selected but c2.dll is still absent:
- Open Visual Studio Installer again.
- Locate the affected installation.
- Select the More menu beside it.
- Choose Repair.
- Confirm the operation.
- Restart Windows when it finishes.
- Test the build or application again.
Repair replaces damaged installation files and restores the toolset as a group. That is preferable to copying only c2.dll, because the compiler also depends on matching executables, libraries, manifests, and configuration files.
Microsoft documents these choices in Modify Visual Studio.
If Visual Studio Installer itself fails
Run the installer again from the Start menu and install any available installer update. Then retry Modify or Repair.

If the installer reports a failed transaction, missing package, or cache problem, follow Microsoft’s Visual Studio and Visual C++ installation troubleshooting guidance. Do not manually place a downloaded DLL into the tool directory while the installer is still damaged.
Fix 2: Check the selected toolset and architecture
Time needed: 5–15 minutes
Several Visual Studio toolsets can coexist on the same computer. Repairing the newest installation may not fix a project that is pinned to an older toolset.
Check the project toolset
In Visual Studio:
- Open the solution.
- Right-click the project in Solution Explorer.
- Select Properties.
- Select Configuration Properties.
- Open General.
- Check Platform Toolset.
- Confirm that the selected toolset is installed.
- Check Configuration Manager and confirm the intended platform, such as Win32 or x64.
- Select Apply, then OK.
- Clean and rebuild the project.
Do not change the platform merely because Windows is 64-bit. A 64-bit Windows installation can run 32-bit Visual Studio tools, and a project may require a specific host and target combination.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Use the correct Developer Command Prompt
For command-line builds:
- Open Start.
- Search for Developer Command Prompt for Visual Studio.
- Open the prompt that matches the required Visual Studio release.
- Change to the project directory.
- Run the normal build command again.
Avoid launching cl.exe from an unrelated terminal whose PATH points to another Visual Studio release. If multiple installations exist, the wrong compiler environment can cause a valid file from one toolset to be ignored.
The compiler files are normally inside a Visual Studio directory resembling:
C:Program FilesMicrosoft Visual Studio<year><edition>VCToolsMSVC<toolset>bin
The exact directory varies by Visual Studio release, edition, host architecture, and target architecture. Do not copy a file from one toolset directory into another.
If the error remains, inspect which compiler is being used:
where cl
Run that command from the same terminal used for the build. If it points to an unexpected installation, open the appropriate Developer Command Prompt or correct the project’s toolset selection.
Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine and verify the file
Time needed: 5–15 minutes
Security software can quarantine a compiler component after an update or false detection.

- MICROSOFT WINDOWS 11 PRO (INGLES) FPP 64-BIT ENG INTL USB FLASH DRIVE
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an event involving
c2.dllor the Visual Studio installation. - Do not restore the file immediately if its location is unknown.
- Check that the original path is inside the expected Microsoft Visual Studio or Build Tools directory.
- Check the file’s Properties and look for a Microsoft digital signature.
- Run a full security scan if the file appeared outside the expected development-tool directory.
- After confirming the installation source, restore the file only if your security policy permits it.
- Reopen Visual Studio Installer and run Repair.
A file named c2.dll is not automatically legitimate. Conversely, a missing file does not by itself prove malware. Location, signature, and installation history matter.
If antivirus software removes the file again, do not repeatedly restore it without understanding the detection. Update the security software, review its detection details, and repair the Microsoft installation from its official source.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteFix 4: Repair the application or game that reports the error
Time needed: 10–30 minutes
If the error appears only with one application, that program may package an older compiler or have lost part of its installation.
- Close the application.
- Open the application’s launcher.
- Look for Verify files, Repair, Scan and repair, or a similar command.
- Run that operation.
- Restart the computer.
- Launch the application again.
If Windows provides a repair option:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Find the affected application.
- Select its three-dot menu.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Test the application.
- Use Reset only if Repair fails and you understand that application data or settings may be removed.
For a traditional desktop program:
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Programs.
- Select Programs and Features.
- Select the affected program.
- Choose Change, Repair, or Modify if offered.
- Complete the wizard and restart Windows.
If the application specifically documents a required Visual Studio or Visual C++ toolset, install that exact supported component. Installing the latest unrelated compiler does not guarantee compatibility with an old bundled program.
Fix 5: Reinstall the exact Visual Studio component
Time needed: 15–45 minutes
Use this when Modify and Repair do not work or when the original installation was partially removed.
- Open Visual Studio Installer.
- Select the affected installation.
- Choose More.
- Select Uninstall only after confirming that the installation is no longer needed by other projects.
- Restart Windows.
- Install Visual Studio or Build Tools again from Microsoft’s official download source.
- Select Desktop development with C++.
- Select the required MSVC toolset and Windows SDK.
- Complete setup.
- Open a matching Developer Command Prompt and test the build.
Microsoft provides current installation information through the C++ tools and workloads documentation.
Do not uninstall every Visual Studio version automatically. Multiple versions may be required by different projects, and a project pinned to an older toolset can stop building if that toolset is removed.
Fix 6: Check Windows component health with DISM and SFC
Time needed: 10–30 minutes
DISM and System File Checker are secondary checks. They repair Windows servicing files and protected Windows files, but they do not normally recreate a missing Visual Studio compiler DLL.
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes if User Account Control appears.
- Run:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for the command to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Run Visual Studio Installer Repair again.
- Test the build or application.
Microsoft’s reference for these commands is Repair a Windows image.

The useful success signs are a completed DISM operation and SFC reporting that it repaired files or found no integrity violations. If both commands complete successfully but c2.dll remains missing, return to Visual Studio Installer rather than repeating SFC and DISM indefinitely.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
When manually running SFC and DISM, it can be difficult to identify which Windows component changed and whether the compiler installation is still incomplete. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system issues and show what it identifies; its repair action is performed by the full version, and it is not required for a Visual Studio-specific repair.
Fix 7: Update or reinstall related drivers only when indicated
Time needed: 10–30 minutes
Drivers are not the usual cause of a missing compiler back end. Consider this step only if the application also reports graphics, chipset, device, or hardware initialization failures.
- Right-click the Start button.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the device category related to the error, such as Display adapters.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Note the provider and driver details.
- Select Update Driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows.
- If the problem began immediately after a driver update, return to the same tab and select Roll Back Driver, if available.
- If the device remains faulty, download the driver from the computer or device manufacturer and reinstall it.
Do not remove a working driver just because c2.dll is missing. Repair the compiler installation first.
Hunting through hardware vendors and matching driver versions manually can be time-consuming when several devices are stale. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify driver issues; installation through the full version is optional and is not a substitute for repairing Visual Studio or reinstalling an application that bundles compiler tools.

Why you should not download c2.dll separately
Avoid DLL download sites and random file-hosting pages. A replacement can contain malware, belong to the wrong Visual Studio release, use the wrong architecture, or fail because other associated compiler files are also missing.
Never copy c2.dll into:
C:WindowsSystem32
C:WindowsSysWOW64
Do not place it in an application directory unless the application’s official installer puts it there. Manual copying can create version conflicts and does not repair the toolset configuration.
The safe sources are:
- Visual Studio Installer
- Microsoft’s official Visual Studio download pages
- The affected application’s official repair or verification feature
- An authenticated Visual Studio subscription or Dev Essentials download when an older release requires it
The Visual Studio older downloads page is the appropriate Microsoft starting point for legacy releases. Some downloads require authentication.

regsvr32 is used for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. c2.dll is a compiler back end, not normally a COM component that should be registered.

Legacy Visual Studio installations
Older applications may require an older compiler binary that is not included with a current Visual Studio installation. Multiple toolsets can coexist, but the newest toolset is not always compatible with a project or application built around an earlier release.
Use Microsoft’s older-download channels and install the release documented by the application. Visual Studio 2010 is out of support, with Microsoft listing its extended support end date as July 14, 2020. Its lifecycle information and Visual Studio 2010 SP1 download information can help identify the correct legacy package.

FAQ
Is c2.dll part of Windows?
No. It is a Microsoft Visual C++ compiler component associated with Visual Studio and related development tools.
Is c2.dll included in the Visual C++ Redistributable?
Generally no. Packages such as vc_redist.x86.exe and vc_redist.x64.exe provide runtime libraries for finished applications. They are not a general repair for a missing compiler back end. Microsoft explains the distinction in Determining which DLLs to redistribute.
Do ordinary Windows users need c2.dll?
Usually not. Most users need it only when Visual Studio, Build Tools, a development workflow, or an application that bundles compiler tools is running.
Should I put c2.dll in System32?
No. Keep it in the Visual Studio toolset directory installed by Microsoft’s setup program.
Why does a 64-bit computer show a 32-bit compiler description?
The description refers to the compiler component’s historical internal name. Windows architecture, compiler host architecture, and project target architecture are separate choices.
What if Repair completes but the error remains?
Check the full path selected by cl.exe or MSBuild, inspect PATH and VCINSTALLDIR, verify the project’s Platform Toolset, and confirm that the correct Visual Studio installation was repaired. If only one application reports the problem, repair that application as well.
Can SFC restore c2.dll?
Not normally. SFC repairs protected Windows system files. c2.dll should generally be restored through Visual Studio Installer or the official installer for the application that owns it.
Is a c2.dll outside Visual Studio always malware?
No, because some applications may bundle compiler tools. However, an unexpected location, missing Microsoft signature, or antivirus detection requires investigation. Do not trust the filename by itself.
